RE: Replacement Parts: Universal vs Manufacturers
Parts
Dear Website Customer:
When your HVAC unit has finally been repaired
and the discomfort of working in the heat (or cold) for a time
is only a memory. . .the bill comes and reality sets in! A frequent
question is, "A widget costs so much?" (Gasp!) Let me
explain our philosophy and policy regarding replacement parts.
. .
The replacement of a failed part opens up
several variables. Therefore, we suggest your discussing the options
of cost and quality with your Service Technician. We stock a wide
variety of aftermarket, universal parts which can solve
most problems quickly. These parts are selected for their low
cost, installation flexibility, and high quality. Allow your Technician
to use these parts whenever possible. Universal parts will almost
always result in a lower cost, high quality repair.
Manufacturers of HVAC equipment often use
highly specialized components, known in the industry as Original
Equipment Manufacturer or OEM for short. These OEM parts
are only stocked by your Technician if the specific part is known
to be required frequently. We use OEM parts only when a universal
part is unavailable, or when the original equipment design is
known to be of superior quality. OEM parts are more costly in
95% of the cases we encounter, but quality is the main factor
in making the decision.
The best advice you can follow is going
to be the experienced recommendation of your Service Technician.
We recommend you ask questions, stay involved in the decision,
and be sure that you are obtaining the repair you want.
If you have any questions on universal and/or
OEM parts, please call me or our Service Manager, Josh Kahn, at
